10+ month old HELP
Written by Debbie Davidson

THis should probably go in the forums, but I really need some advice here.

My 10-almost-11 month old bitch has not gone into heat yet. Is this normal?  Does this mean she will be barren?  She's the product of inbreeding (parents are brother/sister).  COuld this be a factor?

 Should I be worried.

THis is my first bitch, so I really am out of my league here.

Thanks

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

Don't worry about it, she is only 10 months old. Elli had her first season at 10 1/2 months, but another litter mate didn't have her first season until about 14 or 15 months.
If she hasn't had her first season at 15 or 16 months, you might want to go and talk to a vet then.

Phew!!

I'm relieved that she's not abnormal, and probably won't be barren.

I've kept her separated from my male Rottweiler since she was 7 months old, simply because I don't want any accidents (can you imagine a Rottie/white shepherd mix????).

My plan was to allow them to play after her first heat, just so that I'll know the warning signs when she's about to go into heat. I know my Rottie will know WAY before I do.

I guess I'll allow them supervised play time and watch em like a hawk.

THe other concern is that I don't know how my male will react when she's in heat. Will he became a jekyl and Hyde--I'll have to wait to see what happens and impliment my contingency plan.

In the meantime, I continue to enjoy my babies.

Are you sure you wouldn't rather have her spayed and save you the stress? Accidents happen way too easily and even the best breeders with proper setups have accidental matings. If you are in surburbia and don't have anywhere in your backyard to separate them, you don't want your rottie going though a glass window trying to get to your bitch... It does happen...

I'm considering neutering the Rott. I have no plans to breed himl. I'm scared, though, that he'll gain weight and will not be able to handle the utility work in obedience trails.

I would very much like to breed my white Shepherd. You see, the gene pool is extremely small in Jamaica. The whites are nearly extinct.

It is my goal to produce quality white puppies, and get a White Shepherd club going in Jamaica.

Unfortunately, I can't "prove" my bitch in the conformation ring, because she's banned from these. We don't have Schutzund clubs or competitions. The only thing that I can do is do obedience and work towards her CDX.

I'm prepared to do my best with this dog, realizing that she may not be the best dog for breeding, but at the moment, she's the best that's available (and I'm not being partial).

Should I choose to breed her, I will have to either import a white male, or import the semen, as there are no eligible white shepherds here.

So you see my dilemma.

I will be asking a bit of questions on this forum as I begin my research before I breed Cody. So this is NOT a decision I will be taking lightly.

Good to hear Debbie.

I do see your dilemma, but there is always the option to buy a registered, already x-rayed bitch for competition and breeding from the USA. You could start your breeding program over there that way! Then import semen from various countries and use it over your bitch and any nice female pups she has.

That way, you'll know the genetics of what you are dealing with, have full registration and therefore be more likely to have a breed officially registrable in Jamaica!

When you mean there are no eligible white shepherds in Jamaica, does that mean none are registered with your kennel club? What do you know of your bitch's background/pedigree?

It would be much better for you and the country to start ahead by bringing in imported lines and starting that way.

It looks so much better than using a dog for breeding without any family tree information/health/pedigree to start a genepool in Jamaica.

I know it may be expensive, but if you get a few people together from Jamaica who are willing to all put in for it, it is much better and easier!

Hey Brooke,

Unfortunately Jamaica will only dogs to be imported from the UK. So far, I haven't located any good breeders. There are several kennels I'd buy from in the US, but that's verboten.

So far, dog semen can't be imported, though they bring in semen for cows and horses, so I'm going to look into that. We just had a change of government, so I'm hoping that I can get a group of people together who'll be able to encourage the government to revisit their animal importation/exportation laws.

My bitches (they are sisters from different litters), are both registered. Their parents are registered, but the breeder left the registration of the puppies up to their new owners, so I made sure to register mine. So far I'm the only person to have done so. That's what I mean by "there are no eligible males." I will only breed my bitches to a registered male; that way I'll know for sure what's in the pedigree and that the dog is a purebred.

Because I'm a one-woman-band right now where whites are concerned, this is up to me to do. I don't see anyone contributing. The breeder I purchased the bitches from is happy to just let her dogs breed in the backyard.

My "idea" dream for my shepherds is to breed each dog once to different males; keep a white bitch from each; spayed my originals; breed the offsprings once the spay; keep a white bitch from each litter, etc until I get to 4 generations.

Hopefully, by then I'll have a good line. Then I'll invest in a white male (hopefully the whites will become popular by then and someone will be interested in importing with me).

I'm only interested in breeding to a male that has a title--obedience, or CH or Best of something... On my part, I am hoping my bitches will have their CDXs by breeding time.

I won't be ready to breed until Summer or after of 2009 when COdy will be over 2 years old, so I have time to research.

I will be asking questions of everyone from time to time.
